What is a Digital Breakout/Escape Room?
Students are given a variety of websites, images, maps, etc to investigate in order to solve digital locks and "breakout" or "escape" the website. Students can work individually or in teams to beat the clock and escape the site. Technology is needed for this activity (1:1 devices, iPad, computer lap, phone--not ideal but it works in a pinch, etc).
There are plenty of good digital breakouts/escape rooms out there but sometimes you want something specific for the needs of your classroom. I like to tailor breakouts to my class and content. If it's too easy for my students, I add a quick lock to make it harder! Once you learn how to make one digital breakout, making additional ones is quick and easy. My kids love doing Digital Escape Rooms and are always asking for more!
I use these at the end of units or on filler days. You can also create a graphic organizer and make this how they create their notes for a unit. The possibilities are endless!
