In the beginning of each year I like to get students interested in Science by having them create their own invention. I have used this in grades 3-6 for both general education and special education students. The graphic organizer can be modified to meet the needs of your students.
After completing the organizer, depending on how much time you have, students can physically create their invention to the best of their ability. I typically have the students just complete this organizer and draw up a nicer model of their invention. Then, students present their ideas to the class and we vote which invention should be "funded." Explain to students that only 10% of inventions are actually followed through on and funded. It is like a mock "Shark Tank." If you have 20 students, only 2 students will have their invention "funded."
