In this assignment, ninth graders are asked to extend their learning of Greek Mythology by turning an original myth into a children's book. The assignment requires the students to use Greek gods and goddesses correctly. Students also illustrate their own pages.
This is an assignment that students get excited about because they are allowed a bit more freedom and creativity than in tests, essays, and other projects. It addresses the narrative writing standards that are present in the ELA CCSS and many state standards. Depending on the depth of your mythology study in class, the assignment may also require students to perform research about the gods and goddesses to ensure that they are using the deities appropriately in their children's book.
A rubric is included, which you can adapt to your needs. This project can also easily be turned into a PowerPoint, GoogleSlides, Prezi, or even a group script/dramatic presentation. Your kids will enjoy learning more about Greek mythology as they are challenged to think like an Ancient Greek citizen!
