This creative writing assignment has students use their knowledge of Greek Mythology and Mythic Characteristics to create their own myth. This is a fun activity to have students do individually or in small groups before or after reading The Odyssey. I use it after reading the myth "Arachne," but any myth you read with your students could suffice as an example. I use "Arachne" as my example because students find it interesting and it contains most of the mythic characteristics that we study. This assignment lists the main mythic characteristics that students must include in their own myth to explain a natural phenomenon of their choosing. It also asks students to create a cover page to illustrate their myth. I have used this for three years now, and students always enjoy it and come up with great myths!
