Students analyze the successes and failures of Reconstruction by making their own Reconstruction plan in 1865. The assignment provides a brief background and 9 prompts/questions for the students to respond to in creating their Reconstruction plan. They must also objectively compare their plan to the actual Reconstruction Plan put into place after the Civil War. The instructions detail the 5 items students must discuss in comparing and contrasting plans. UPDATED to include an optional image analysis section. A points distribution is included. Sample questions include:
--What percent of the southern population must take an oath of loyalty to be able to be represented in Congress? Why did you choose that number?
--Will there be a strong, centralized, federal presence in the South enforcing political and civil equality? Why or why not? If so, for what duration and how is that duration determined?
--Should there be a Freedmen’s Bureau, and if so, what should be its reach and scope?
