These reading response booklets are designed for developing or newly independent readers. They are ideal for 2nd grade, although they could work for the 1st-3rd range depending on ability.
There are 8 different half-page cover choices with room for the student’s name, the title of the book, and the author’s name. These all have a drawing space with fun borders to make an illustration for the booklets. Then, there are 16 pages of half-page reading response sheet choices (for a total of 32 half-page choices). Many are in “draw & write” format, while some require writing only.
Concepts covered include story elements (multiple options), sequence of events (multiple options), opinions (multiple options), comparing and contrasting (multiple options), identifying the narrator, making a prediction, what was learned from reading, questions after reading, main idea, lesson of the story, and making connections to the text (multiple options).
These reading response booklets are intended for students who are reading beginner chapter books and who can independently write sentences and use graphic organizers to express their ideas. The half-page format makes the read & respond activities manageable for newly independent readers/writers to complete after reading – “just right,” without being too lengthy.
The reading response booklet can be completed as an after-reading activity. You could complete a new page every day after reading, complete a page every other day, or even create a whole booklet as a culminating activity after the book has been completed. Choose only the pages that you want to use and make the booklets as short, or as long, as you’d like!
I recommend completing each reading response worksheet with your student(s) first. Some of the worksheets can be completed independently early on, while others can be used to reinforce teaching of new, more challenging concepts. As your student(s) develops stronger reading and writing skills throughout the school year, more of these reading response worksheets may be completed independently.
Becoming a newly independent reader is an exciting time! These reading response booklets are an ideal way for your student(s) to remember and record their responses to the books they read. The half-page style is the perfect fit for students who no longer need prompting and support to write sentences on their own, but who are not quite ready to respond with paragraphs or use full-page graphic organizers. The completed booklets make nice mini-projects and will add to your student(s) sense of accomplishment after completing a new book.
Home Educators: These reading response booklets would make a great addition to your homeschool portfolio for end-of-year assessment, or just for personal memory-keeping for this grade level! These booklets can also serve as keepsakes to remember the stories read in a given school year.
Classroom Educators: These reading response booklets are ideal for both small group and whole class instruction.
