Ever wonder what it would be like to live in a perfect world? A world run by a perfect government, a world where people treated one another the right way all the time, and a world in which all your favorite things were always in abundance? It might be time for you and your students to create your PERFECT world - your PERFECT utopia!

In this interactive, hands on (creative) activity, students will critically think about their ideal world - answering questions to support and help them reflect on what constitutes a perfect Utopian society.

Then, students will scrounge through old magazines, newspapers, and personal memorabilia (photos, ticket stubs, etc.) to create a college that well represents their ideas of what a perfect world should be. Their posters should be unique to them and their ideas, as everyone has a slightly different opinion of what a true Utopian world would look like.

Finally, students will reflect on their finished, comprehensive poster to answer an essay prompt question, which asks them to reflect on how their Utopia and present day society are different. This essay also allows students the opportunity to explain some of the symbols/words they chose to incorporate on their visual representation, and what they might stand for or mean.

This is a fantastic activity that students genuinely get excited about working on, and one that will surely help them understand the indisputable difference between Utopian societies and Dystopian societies. It will allow some students to see Dystopian fiction as a genre of literature and connect it with our present day society, and help them realize why Dystopian Fiction is such a popular genre of literature among readers today.

A simple, standards based teacher rubric is included with space for feedback.

*This is a great activity to complete before or during dystopian literature units.
