Word Problem Generator! Choose a situation card. Choose an Operation card. Choose a pair of numbers. Now go write a word problem your classmates will enjoy solving! Use this fabulous activity one week a month, or once per week ALL YEAR LONG!
Allow students to use calculators! They need the practice, and it allows them to focus on the REASONING! It may even get them out of the habit of seeing the numbers 21 and 7 as an indication that it MUST be a division problem!
These cards were designed for third and fourth graders, and I have used them as an enrichment activity for second graders. It is also an excellent intervention activity for 5th and 6th grades. There is a blank template page if students wish to make their own trendy context cards. (Fortnite won't be popular forever, right??)
They are a simple math station... as you can leave the cards in cups or baggies and students can reuse repeatedly. There is more buy in and more demonstration of understanding WHEN and WHY you would use subtraction or division.... etc.
OPTIONAL: Use only addition and subtraction cards early in the year, and level up with X and ÷ later.
OPTIONAL: Level up by having proficient students choose TWO operation cards for a multi-step problem.
60 Situation Cards
60 Number Pairs
30 Operation Cards (+-x÷)
Blank recording sheet (for 3 word problems and an answer key box)
1 follow up problem solving sheet with numbers/answer key
Here is another fabulous way to develop THINKING and REASONING skills needed for problem solving, on tests.... and more importantly, in life!
