Used after a lesson about the 8 features of civilization, and students get to work in groups to create their own society!
Used this in the beginning of the year with my World History and W.H. honors kids. It was a huge hit!
They have to choose where to put their city, based on the map of Florida provided. (near bodies of water)
You can also substitute your own state map in there, as long as it shows all the rivers, lakes, etc.
Students have to decided what livestock to raise, what type of government their civilization should have, what type of crops to have, and they have to design a flag.
A rubric clearly explains what the students have to do to earn the grade of their choice. This project easily takes up several class periods.
There are varying degrees of student-choice within the project. For example, they can come up with 10 laws for their society or they can come up with a song, or they can draw some unique architecture in their city.
My students loved this. It gets them to show understanding through creation, and admin loved this project.
I suggest pairing any ELLs with high performers.
Let me know if you have any questions or suggestions for improvement! Thanks again :)
