In this cross-curricular activity, students will work independently or in small groups to design a country. This involves negotiation, art skills, and teamwork!
They will later create a census (math integration), as well as design a government (history integration). All of the instructions are given in an engaging, thorough manner, and include 'bonus activities' for students who finish early or want to score higher on the final tally. This project can take anywhere from 2 to 7 days, depending on which parts of the assignment you want to give them.
This project would be great as an end-of-the-year review in a History, Government or Social Studies classroom. It could also fill 1 to 2 weeks of a substitute teacher's plans.
I did it last year with my students, and they had a ton of fun. It's a perfect cure for 'senioritis'. (Or just end of the year-itis)
