In this activity students practice new genetics concepts to create a creature in a genetics cross. Students flip a coin to determine which traits the offspring will receive. Students determine the genotype and phenotype of the creature and then draw and color the creature according to the determined phenotypes.
Activity comes in two versions, which are slightly different from one another. Version 1: Less guided and for regular and advanced students. Version 2: A little more guided and for ELL students, students on an IEP or 504 or for any other student that may need a little more assistance.
Students practice newly learned vocab and concepts:
Codominance (a.k.a Incomplete Dominance)
Principle of Dominance
I am also selling an extension assignment ( Link-Create a Creature Genetics Extension - Punnett Square Problems
) to go with this activity for $1.50. The two assignments together will probably take 2 class periods. On the first day, students do the activity portion and on the second day students finish up the activity and do the extension, which includes a part where they analyze their results and a part where they solve genetic problems using Punnett Squares.
