This is a great activity for a center or station or small groups. I would use it at the beginning of the year or when you see your students struggling with studying and preparing for your class. It is also a good activity to do before major breaks in winter or spring. I consider this activity to apply to grades 5 through 9. I found that my 8th grade students, even my gifted ones, struggled with knowing how to study, as my district did not emphasize that skill. Hopefully, this will give your students some direction in this area.
In this activity, students are creating a homework basket. The homework basket is a set of tools that help make doing homework and studying easier, quicker and therefore, more successful. I personally found that spending 15 to 20 minutes on Fridays in my class discussing study skills, colleges, etc. more than made up for the time I may have lost teaching my standards. My students in the Title 1 school that I taught in looked forward to this discussion each week.
