One of my favorite St. Patrick's Day stories to read aloud to my class is "How to Catch a Leprechaun" by Adam Wallace. The children enjoy the storyline and fantastic illustrations, and quickly begin predicting successes and failures in the story, as well as brainstorming their own plan for making a successful trap.
I created this activity to harness that excitement into a fun at-home project that encourages students to make a plan before rushing into the project, and comparing two plans to determine the more-successful option.
The letter to send home explains the directions to parents, and the brainstorm sheet is easy for students to complete. I've also included a grading rubric for your convenience.
