In this assignment, students read an article from a cooking magazine about the proper ratios of ingredients in a cake recipe. They write out the proportions between sugar and flour, eggs and fat (butter or shortening), liquid and sugar, and leavening and flour. Then, they create their own recipe.
I use this assignment for my applied math class. It's a great cross-curricular activity that combines reading and math and FACS. I offer extra credit to anyone who tests out their recipe and brings it in for us to sample!
