This is a Group Project to coincide with the a unit on the U.S. Constitution. The Project will reinforce many of the key concepts and principles of the Constitution, including Rights, Liberty, Democracy and Equality by seeing how it applies in their own setting. It will help develop the student's metacognitive abilities, as it gets them to question the application of these ideals in their own lives.
The project also encourages collaboration between students in the group as well as throughout the whole school as they need to communicate with all the people in the school in order to craft a fair and just Constitution for all. Because my school practices project based learning and I had a lot of support from my administration and fellow teachers, this proved to be a very meaningful project for my class and they were able to see many of their ideas implemented in the school.
Along with the project instructions, I have included many worksheets, and scaffolding that I used to help students of all interests and skill level to be able to learn and contribute effectively. Additionally, I incorporated the creation of a flag to the project to add an artistic element, to writing, interviewing and presentation requirements, but you can certainly adapt it as you see fit. The entire project packet includes nine separate documents- The Project instructions and Steps to Completion, and eight other worksheet/scaffold assignments that can be utilized at the teacher's discretion.
Hope this is helpful!
