Drawing from observation, creating surface textures, 3D form, casting shadows is no easy feat. There are some handy tricks though to breakdown even the most beautifully rendered still life drawings into manageable and achievable steps! On to the first step to observational drawing .... creating a tonal scale.
In this task we practice creating tonal scale using grey lead pencil, colour pencil and fine liner. This lesson is suitable for students from Year 4 to senior high school. It can be a short introduction task of 15 minutes or can be extended to a full lesson (which is how I deliver it).
