Attached is a project I use for my self contained middle school class (Is also used by 6th -8th grade general ed in my school). It is used for Black History Month but can be adapted to any other significant event, time period, or purpose. In the project students spend time researching important people or events then create a research project about their person or event. After research students create a "Museum Wing" in a predetermined location at the school where their "Artifacts" are hung along with their essay discussing the person or event. During Black History Month students act as museum curators and guide students, staff members, community members, and parents on a tour of the museum wing. Project includes an overview with syllabus detailing different deliverables in the project, a graphic organizer for research, and a graphic organizer to help students turn research into a detailed 5 paragraph essay. I've done this project with students for years and it is both engaging and educational by allowing students to not only create artistic projects but see how artifacts can be displayed in a museum.
