Creating Art that Tells a Story: Narratives in Visual Art
In this lesson students will work collaboratively to examine a variety of works by various artist and decipher the narrative in which it tells. In doing so students will look past simply seeing art as aesthetic but as a means of communication. They will identify important parts of a composition that provide clues to the message(s) the artists are trying to convey i.e.. Setting, characterization and symbols contained within artworks. Student groups will work together to outline and tell a familiar story using visual imagery as a means to communicate the important ideas/events within that story. Lastly, students will then engage in creating their own original piece of art that tells a story they consider to be personally important.
