Have your students create their own children’s stories! Try this unique unit that will entice your students AND cover over a dozen MN English/Language Arts standards! By having your students write children's stories, they can practice the writing process, incorporate elements of fiction, strengthen their use of the Six Traits of Writing, hone punctuation skills such as quotation marks, publish using technology for a wide range of audiences, and practice their reading fluency skills as well. Students can work at their own differentiated level on self-chosen masterpieces! My name is Nicky Courneya, and I work as a sixth grade language arts teacher. I created this unit from scratch because the material I found online simply didn't meet my needs. I have used it for four years now. At year's end, students dub it as the "best project of the year!"
This unit is planned out day-by-day for an entire month of enhanced instruction. It includes everything that is needed to conduct the project including: plot diagram, plot patterns, type of resolutions, story starters, storyboards, student conference record, peer checklist, editing circles, and rubric.
