The purpose of this lesson is to help students know what to expect and create a safe predictable environment. It is important to understand the importance of rules and routines for individuals with disabilities and apply them in various settings and situations. Application of rules and routines in the classroom and at school helps students engage more successfully in activities.
This lesson encourages students to participate in making classroom rules. The idea of this lesson is that students will benefit from writing some class rules together. When students help write the rules, and take part in the process of deciding upon the rules and consequences, they are more apt to feel a sense of belonging and ownership. Students who are empowered in this way begin to self-regulate and develop a sense of pride in the environment they are helping to shape.
1. Students will establish rules that will be used in the classroom.
2. Students will create appropriate classroom rules using visuals.
