PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Lessons That Create Writers are exactly what their name denotes: writing lessons that will help turn your students into bonafide writers! This first mini-unit in the series, Creating Dynamic Characters, will teach your middle schoolers how to take their character creations and descriptions to the next level. Through direct instruction, guided practice, and independent practice, students will examine the four methods authors use to reveal their characters to their readers and then use what they learned to write about a character of their own creation. Then, through sharing and reflection, as well as formative assessment, students will solidify what they learned about creating dynamic characters.

Included in this product:

• a detailed lesson plan
• a PowerPoint to use during instruction
• worksheets and notes for students to use during the lesson
• an interactive foldable organizer for students to include in their notes
• an exit ticket to use as a formative assessment
• Common Core alignment for grades 6-8

This lesson is stand-alone and a perfect supplement to any middle school writing curriculum.

You can also use this lesson as part of a reading/literature class to teach characterization!

(And on a personal note… I love to use these lessons when I am getting observed by a supervisor or administrator, as they provide lots of opportunity for you to demonstrate how well you can provide direct instruction, facilitate guided instruction, support independent practice, and close a lesson with reflection and formative assessment!)
