Creating addition and subtraction story problems is a higher level thinking task and can be tricky for students to do and for teachers to teach. I have had greater success when I begin by activating prior knowledge and then break the task into smaller, easy to follow steps.
This set is designed to help you review addition and subtraction problem solving and then to aid you in teaching students to create their own problems. A slide show that includes child friendly text and visuals will help students review prior learning about the operations of addition and subtraction. An addition and subtraction sort can be copied and used as seat work or a station. This activity will give your students practice in identifying key words as they sort them by the addition or subtraction operations. Then use the teaching slides to model and demonstrate how to create a story problem. Students will have fun creating their own using number spinners and story picture cards. A graphic organizer for writing story problems will break down the steps and allow students to feel successful in completing this task.
