The Strategy Sticks offer an opportunity for educators to work metacognitive awareness and executive functioning training into their day-to-day teaching, without adding more than a few minutes to the academic curriculum materials. The strategy sticks teaches Metacognition, Critical Thinking skills, as well as Executive Functioning skills. These skills are the foundation for academic functioning. Unfortunately, many children have gaps in their foundational skills, resulting in poor executive functioning as well as learning problems. Therefore, metacognition, cognitive functioning, and executive functioning should be taught to children as young as kindergarten, and should continue through high school! A strong foundation means strong academic skills.
The sticks can be used in a classroom, or in one-on-one teaching. They can be used with any academic task, or even with games. The strategies are divided into the three areas of thinking: Information Input– Information Processing – Information Output.
These three areas are crucial for learning. With younger children, use only the Level 1 Strategy Sticks. Higher elementary grades, and middle and high school students will need the complete set of all 3 levels.
