This is my all time favorite lesson! It is a lesson I use at the beginning of the year and continue to use throughout the year. Thematic Statements, like analysis strategies, are great to teach at the beginning of the year as a tool for you and students to use throughout the year and develop skills. These can be used for almost everything you read and discuss, to help students demonstrate a well-developed, meaningful understanding of the text. Thematic Statements also push students to create original ideas and thoughtful analysis, as opposed to typical, clichéd themes like: “Never judge a book by its cover” or “Home is where the heart is.” It is a must have, must do procedure for every classroom.
