Product Description

Use this versatile Theme Statement package to teach students how to write theme statements all year round. This 46-page package contains a 5-page handout that is perfect for mini-lessons, posters, handouts, and to project during lessons. It provides a model, a formula, guiding questions, and guidelines for students. In addition, it contains 20 different graphic organizers that can be used through the year regardless of the text being used in the classroom. The graphic organizers can be used individually whole class or be distributed during differentiation, small group instruction, or for reinforcement and homework practice. These graphic organizers help students understand various themes, how to write theme statements, gathering evidence, visualizing themes, summarizing themes, identifying concert and supporting details, and quote analysis. Students explore how to analyze key words and phrases, how the evidence highlights the author’s universal message, and what it reveals about human nature. Students also examine how the literary elements and techniques present in the text help develop the theme. They make text-to connections and debate whether or not they agree with the theme statement. A 3-page handout of common theme statements is included and a 1 page graphic organizer that direct students to independently practice using the formula to generate theme statements. Students can reflect on their understanding of the concept of theme statements and the creation process on a 1-page reflection sheet. The 10 potential exit tickets can be used as a form of assessment and promote dialogue and discussion in the classroom. Two original fictional stories and text analysis can be used during the scaffolding process or can be used as independent/group work. Lastly, it includes a 2 page handout of sentence stems that prompt analysis and an engaging and vibrant 11 slide PowerPoint that corresponds to the Theme Handout.
