Creative writing lesson teaches students to use similes and metaphors to effect tone and mood. Students are given tips and rules about avoiding clichés and have to practice rewriting sentences with and without clichés. Roll the dice and students write scenes from randomly selected settings and moods. Automatic dice selects from settings like junkyard or cabin in the woods with varying moods like anxiety, bitterness. Set the timer and have student’s free-write. Students will quickly learn tone and mood and how to incorporate similes and metaphors. I’ve used it many times, students have fun and will be eager to share their work!
