**Please note that this is Lesson #6 in a series of 6 lessons and students should already have an understanding of prefixes-roots-suffixes before starting this activity. I have found that it works best as a post-assessment activity.
In this activity, students can use their knowledge of prefixes and suffixes to create new words based on the root words that are provided. This worksheet has three new roots along with a word bank for prefixes and suffixes. Students are asked to create new words using a prefix, root, and suffix and then, using their knowledge of prefixes and suffixes, and the given root meaning, come up with what they think is the correct defintion. Once this part is completed, students look up the words they have created and write down the correct dictionary definition and judge how close they came. They grade themselves using happy faces or sad faces and tally them up at the bottom of the worksheet.
This activity reinforces prefix and suffix skills, English language connections to other languages, analytical thinking, comparisons, and research skills.
