Creating a fictional character and setting begins with a guided practice for which the the teacher sets the pace. This taps into the students' imagination and demonstrates how much backstory an author may need to know before beginning their piece. The second part directs students to distill the essence of part 1 into a manageable list that can actually be used to create the story's basic situation. Finally, students are asked to turn the list into an opening paragragh. An example is provided. Mood is also touched upon.
