This is a summative assessment that focuses on student knowledge regarding dominant and recessive genes, along with Punnett Squares and patterns of inheritance. This activity is very hands-on as students flip coins in order to determine the genes of the dad and mom smiley faces. They then use Punnett Squares to figure out the probability of the baby smiley face inheriting certain genes and then design the faces on paper.

I have differentiated this assignment by including a written extension where students have to explain in writing why their baby smiley face looks the way it does and I have also modified this assignment by only having students create the smiley face for both mom and dad, and not use the Punnett Square application for the baby smiley face. Once students hand in their finished product, it makes for an in-depth classroom discussion if you hang them on the wall so students are able to see the genetic diversity.
