this experiment involves three experiments - looking at how temperature affects the solubility of solids and gases and how intermolecular forces affect solubility of liquids.
i always do this experiment over two 75 minute classes. in the first period, the class does the potassium nitrate experiment as a group. groups are given different starting spots [ie group 1 has 5 ml of water, group 2 starts with 10 ml of water etc] and all temperatures are recorded on the board. a scatter plot of data is made by each student.
day 2 is short with the student mixing different liquids and observing water boil. cough.
the rest of the period i show them how to convert the solubility numbers to create a graph.
