This document presents students with fifteen number problems for which they must determine the unknown number(s) based upon a described relationship. The problems require that they first assign a variable to represent the unknown(s), write a quadratic equation, solve the quadratic equation, and then determine the number(s).
While the vast majority of the resulting quadratic equations are of the form x^2 + bx + c, there are several which are of the form ax^2 + bx + c whereby "a" can be factored out. One problem (#9) results in a quadratic equation of the form ax^2 + bx + c in which "a" cannot be factored.
Although students could use the quadratic formula in solving any of the resulting quadratic equations, all of the equations can be solved through factoring.
Full solutions are provided for all of the problems. The document is in Word and can be modified should you like.
