Looking for ways to encourage musical creativity with ipads? This comprehensive unit for small group composition and creativity uses the app MadPad HD, and includes the following:

*Overview
*Alignment to the NCCAS standards for first-fifth grade
*Suggestions for working on ipads in small groups
*Eight detailed lessons, including objectives, process, and potential difficulties. Each lesson is either 15-20 or 20-25 minutes each, so you can fit it into a longer lesson as you see fit.
*Composition worksheet
*Composition assessment-tracking (which allows you the opportunity to track how well each student is doing with creating and following directions)
*Suggestions for adaptation (for smaller groups of 2, larger groups of 5-6, and using only one ipad)
*Composition visuals
*MadPad reflection worksheet
*Directions for worksheets

Each lesson includes a few objectives; the objectives for the eight lessons in total include:
*To assign students groups and numbers within their group
*To review students’ groups and numbers within their group
*To show an example of music created with sounds around us
*To discuss what makes music
*To acquaint students with MadPad
*To create patterns with sounds within the app
*To create music to the form AAA or AAAA
*To create music to the form AAB or AABB
*To record compositions
*To record compositions to share with the teacher
*To experiment with any/all sets in MadPad HD
*To discuss what sounds have in common
*To create own set with sounds around room
*To create patterns with created set
*To document which sets they used, and which students played which parts
*To reflect on sounds/ patterns they would choose
*To reflect on sets they liked the best
