In connection to the study of the novel Thunder over Kandahar, I created experiences for my students that involved music, poetry, art, and culinary opportunities all connected to Afghanistan.
What is shared in this document are weekly experiences (a total for four) for your students to allow them to connect to a place and culture that they may not be familiar with. I found this experience to be one of the most rewarding things I have done for my students as a way to help them see how closely alike we all are while also introducing them to a new culture.
These are all OUTSIDE of school opportunities for students and do not require a great deal of planning on a teacher's part. Instead, the experiences are driven by the students, which makes them much more meaningful.
