Students work in groups to create their own dance.
They can pick their own song.
The requirements are:
Use different pathways (sideways, forward, backward, diagonal)
Make movements that match the timing of the music
Make movements that are exaggerated/big in shape
Use transitions that are sharp or smooth to match mood of music
Use different levels (high, medium, low)
Have spacing between group members throughout the dance
Make good use of the space
Face audience when presenting
This task is best assigned after a series of lessons have been taught to students about pathways, shapes, space, timing, movement, levels...etc
If teaching in Ontario, a good resource is the OPHEA document which has several unit plans devoted to teaching your students dance.
