This 9-week Creative Nonfiction writing unit is geared toward the upper levels of high school. I derived this unit from my own experience in the University of Iowa's prestigious writing courses.
All the materials you would need to teach this unit can be found in the book "Tell it Slant" by Brenda Miller and Suzanne Paula. All of the short stories assigned in this unit can be found in that book, and many of them can be found online as well.
This product includes:
**A six-page syllabus, outlining every class, homework assignment, and due dates for 45 days
**Assignment descriptions and sign-up pages so students understand expectations
**Multiple "daily writing prompts" that students can respond to in a journal, in the printable pages I provide in this product, OR on an online blog (this last option is highly recommended).
Throughout this unit, students learn to appreciate creative nonfiction writing. They learn to analyze writers' decisions and experiment with using those same techniques in their own writing. Students also partake in writing workshops of different sizes and formats. Over the course of the unit, students write five short stories and two longer essays, all in the creative nonfiction genre. They eventually use the writing workshops to edit and revise before creating their Creative Nonfiction Writing portfolio.
In my opinion, Creative Nonfiction is the most important writing genre, as it allows students to not only express themselves in ways they can't through speech, but it also allows students to learn more about his or her peers, ultimately leading to acceptance and compassion.
**This unit is geared toward a class of fifteen students but could easily be manipulated to apply to a class of twenty or more**
