These cards offer a creative way for children to learn rhythm while having fun with math! Each of these 36 cards is cut to size to represent the duration of the note it represents: a half-note card is half the size of a whole note, a quarter note card is one quarter the size of the whole note, and so on through a combination of various note values. Children understand through hands-on manipulation of the cards how rhythmic patterns work since they are physically able to "fit" the cards one on the other. Four time signature cards are also provided.
Begin by selecting a basic whole note/half-note combination of cards for the children to clap. As they progress, you may add other cards and invite the children to create their own patterns using one of the four time signature cards (which allow instructors to introduce fractions if they so wish). In this way, you are able to use these cards to make hundreds of rhythm patterns tailored to the skill level of each student. To strengthen eye-hand coordination, turn cards stems up for clapping with the right hand, stems down for left hand. Laminated cards are writable and erasable.
