Moving students from one level of writing to the next is a challenging and daunting task. Their ideas may be insightful, but their writing style lags behind -- filled with repetitious diction and syntax. Directing students to elevate their language often leads to an unhealthy attachment to the thesaurus, which creates unbalanced prose and artificial wording. A more subtle and creative approach is to encourage students to focus on figurative verbs to make their writing more vivid. I have included a lesson for in-class activities as well as instruction that will challenge students to use the bank throughout their school year.
Excellent companion to my Syntax and Punctuation Variety Bank
