This product contains two variations of a quick creative writing activity. Each version of the assignment uses several prompts to generate an intriguing rough draft of a poem that the students can then workshop, revise, and/or edit as they choose.
This activity can be used across a wide range of grade levels – 5th grade through adult – and is appropriate in creative writing classrooms or as part of a poetry unit in a language arts class.
This assignment is meant to reveal to students that free verse poems are structured not around rhyme and meter but around internal patterns of imagery and sound.
Encourage students to write down their first impressions of each prompt without thinking too hard about the “right” answer.
