Product Description
Need some help with creative writing? This lesson will help you model and practice writing a believable character. This product is a zip file containing three separate printables.

The first document is a four page printable which defines, models, and allows students to practice writing a detailed character descriptions for any type of creative writing project or prompt. It first gives examples of rich published character descriptions. Next, the lesson asks students to search for published setting descriptions and note the authors words and phrases. Then, it shows a detailed list of characteristics for personality traits and another list for physical characteristics. Lastly, it prompts students to write a paragraph developing a protagonist. There is a peer conference option at the end.

Next, there are the interactive task cards. These are a LOT of fun. "Squiggle Stop" is an interactive way to bring creative writing into any class! These are 4 task cards to determine character, character description, setting, and setting description. This product is a 4 page PDF file which can be used for upper elementary or middle school students. They are designed to be printed, in color, and laminated for each individual students.

This is how they work: Each students places their pointer finger on the side which states "Character Descriptions". They close their eyes and then squiggle their finger around until they hear the word "Stop". Whichever word they land on becomes the character description word for a character. Then they do the same for a character. So they could end up will over 100 outcomes! This process repeats for the setting.

For example, if they chose "creative" for character trait, "ice cream man" for character, "joyful" for setting description and "hotel room" for setting they have a "creative ice cream man who lives in a joyful hotel room." Let the creative writing begin! My students absolutely loved these! We have used them a few times throughout the school year. It's a very fun tool for teaching writing.

The last printable is the corresponding sheet for the "Squiggle Stop" task cards. It guides students to create believable characters in a creative setting. I hope you love this product!
