Students write more and better when they get to write about something interesting. Writing choice boards are a great way for students to build their writing stamina as well as allow students to pick from a variety of topics. I usually assign this and give students about two weeks to complete it. They can work on it during any down time in class or you can give them a short period of time to work on it. It's also great for those who finish their work early and always need something else to work on. This has a large variety of topics for students to choose from. Students write short responses (1-3 paragraphs) for each of the topics they choose and staple them together when ready to hand in their completed work. This has worked really well with my gifted 4th grade class, but it can also be done with different grade levels and abilities - you can adjust the number of choices they complete and how long they have to work on it.
