    This five-unit creative writing course which contains the following units with handouts, PowerPoint Presentations, Instructional techniques, Peer Critique forms, Rubrics for self- and teacher evaluation, and brainstorming activities. The Schedule outlines day-by-day lesson planning for each unit. Every unit builds upon the last unit's Learning Targets, and every unit ends with a lesson plan using a film to prepare students for the next unit. This high school curriculum can be taught at the middle school level. This is aligned to Common Core for English 9-10 & 11-12.

    • First Week / Classroom Management: include teaching schedule for the included units; syllabus, class rules & policies, and setting the tone for Daily Journaling. Also includes building classroom relationship activities "Letter to Teacher" and "Trio Tales" small group skit activity.
    • Unit One: Prose Sketch Unit. This unit practices the basic foundations of creative writing: characterization, setting, and dialogue. PowerPoint presentation demonstrate skills and technique, activities include whole class instruction and individual practice, and peer critique evaluation that implements student-to-student interaction. Unit ends with preparation for next unit, "Childhood Memoirs," by analyzing the film, "Brighton Beach Memoirs."
    • Unit Two: Childhood Memoir. This unit uses the skills from the previous unit, and adds narrative writing skills, such as creating a "hook opening" and developing a "reflective ending" in creating a memoir based on a childhood event. PowerPoint presentation demonstrate skills and technique, activities include whole class instruction and individual practice, and peer critique evaluation that implements student-to-student interaction. Unit ends with preparation for next unit, "The Hero's Journey," by analyzing the film, "The Little Mermaid."
    • Unit Three: The Hero's Journey. (Credit: writer Steven Barnes). This unit builds upon the previous two units in creating a short story based on Steven Barnes' work "Lifewriting" using the Hero's Journey template. Students learn ten-basic allegorical elements of the Hero's Journey through writing a short story. PowerPoint presentation demonstrate skills and technique, activities include whole class instruction and individual practice, and peer critique evaluation that implements student-to-student interaction. Unit ends with preparation for next unit, "Video Production," by analyzing the film, "Be Kind, Rewind."
    • Unit Four: The Video Production. This unit builds upon the creative writing skills from previous units, but this time, a small team of students work together to develop an end product: a sit-com or sit-drama video, with two commercial breaks. PowerPoint presentation demonstrate skills and technique, activities include whole class instruction and individual practice, and peer critique evaluation that implements student-to-student interaction. Unit ends with class evaluation on each group's video, a self-evaluation on the student's participation and the small group, and an Film Festival awards
