Writing in any form can be a daunting experience for the reluctant student. However the writing exercises in this power point 'Crafting the Writer' will engage students to think and write about their own perception of 'self' and others.
One of the objectives, for the student, of this unit is to figure out such things as why you want to write, what you want to write, in terms of genre, and perhaps even what you want to say.
Students will need to consider the different purposes for writing and for whom they are writing.
Through this exploration, the students will consider, reflect and discuss two poems, one by Margaret Atwood and the other by Julia Noboa Polanco regarding identity. They will then be given a writing exercise based on this theme. Through further study of Persona literary examples, the students will then write their own assignment. The last exercise culminates their investigations into one assignment, Creating Character.
There are a total of four assignments with this unit:
• Opening writing exercise is based on an image.
• Identity/Self exercise
• Persona exercise
• Final Assignment with Rubric: Creating Character (Persona)
The writing examples of the Poems and Persona, given in the ppt., are also enclosed in hard copy, as an option to hand out.
This unit is a good segue into reading a novel.
Feedback on this writing unit is welcome. Enjoy!
