All you need to provide for students besides these documents is a picture! Cut out a variety of pictures from magazines, or print some off the internet. Students could even bring in their own.
The creative part of this assignment is that students are able to write a story based off a picture, whether they use the picture as the entire inspiration, or look at the picture as a small part of a bigger story.
This packet includes a brainstorming chart where students start to think about what story the picture could be a part of. (For example, if it's a picture of a mailbox, is someone waiting for something important to come in the mail? Did someone witness a crime when they were walking outside to check the mail? Is there a small community of ants living in the mailbox and they are going to tell their story?)
The packet also includes a page where students develop a character for their story. The character may be someone pictured, or made by them.
A story map that is included for students to fill in helps them plan their story before they start writing.
The rubric used is also attached.
