This is one of my favorite creative writing assignments to do with my students. I've done this assignment with my 8th graders and my 11th graders and it is always embraced with great enthusiasm. With my 11th graders I've done it in conjunction with a Ben Franklin unit but this creative writing assignment can also stand on its own. I usually start my students in class setting up the assignment, giving them time to brainstorm and jot down initial ideas. I then give them a couple of days at home to finish the assignment. I give bonus points to anyone who is willing to share their "masterpiece" (as I like to call it) in class. This assignment generates so much excitement that almost all of them share their work in class!
