This four assignment unit on creative writing allows students to engage in the writing process using something that will really get their creative juices flowing! Using a different food/drink item for each assessment, and a unique form of creative expression (marketing slogan, thesis statement about pb&j, recipe from a family member, story of flavor origin, birthplace, creation, journey to the mouth, food critic reviews, etc.), students are limited by their own imagination. This assignment is well paired with food! Students of all ages will savor the sweetness of being "epicurious" and creative writers.
I incorporated our class vocabulary and grammar lessons as they were best suited for one assessment or another. This can be tailored for your use - or for your taste-buds!
I did not use a rubric for this assignment; rather, I had students self and partner assess for varying foci over the course of the year.
