In this project, students crosscut the subjects of Language Arts, Science, and Art as they write and illustrate their own story of how they discovered the center of the Earth.
This can be completed as a research project or after a unit on inside Earth. I have completed it in my science class and even though there is only a 1 page minimum, 6th graders have wrote 3 to 4 pages filled with descriptions of what they see and do.
While the facts about each layer must be true, I allow creativity to flow in how students reach the center, how they discover each fact, and how they survive extreme heat. The prewriting sheet included helps students to organize these thoughts before writing.
To enhance the work, midway through the project a writing workshop is included. This workshop takes about 50 minutes and may or may not be completed in one class period. Descriptions and instruction cards for each student job are included.
Included in package: Student instruction and prewriting sheet; grading rubric; writing workshop instructions; student job cards
