This is a very large writing assignment called "The Me Tree". It begins by comparing the students' lives to a tree that is divided into three sections (the roots= their past, the trunk=their present, the leaves= their future).
They are given many different writing options and asked to select three from each section. The final assessment piece is a book with 9 pieces of writing (plus a reflective piece about their book's design) about their past, present and future.
There are many writing options for students to choose from, including very straightforward pieces (like describing your favourite TV show, or a childhood pet), creative pieces (like explaining how their future-self saved the world), and interesting pieces, like conducting an interview with an older family member, or asking a parent to fill out a questionnaire about the student.
This package also contains a section with guidelines for peer review, as well as some assessment criteria. There is no specific rubric for this assignment, as I use the assessment criteria to create it as a class.
This is a great assignment for either the beginning, or the end of the year and will create an excellent display for your classroom.
