The unit contains a variety of 30 different writing prompts incorporating several different techniques used to get your students engaged in the writing process.
There are four main writing exercises used throughout the unit:
Spark Words – This prompt asks students to quickly jot down any ideas that come to mind when they think of the word. Encourage your students to think outside the box on this one by coming up with emotions, colors and images that maybe aren't ordinarily associated with this term.
What Ifs – This prompt ask students to consider a story line that may not follow a traditional path. Again, this type prompt gets them to think about story lines that may not always jump out at them otherwise.
First Lines – This is a very fun writing prompt in that these exercises give a ‘first line’ to a story and ask students to keep on writing as if there was plenty more story to go, using this starter as a springboard for ideas.
Direct Prompts – This exercise simply gives the students a particular task to write about.
