These questions and statements were designed as a pre-assessment tool at the beginning of a Creative Writing class, but would be useful to any English class. After the students filled out a chart, documenting their number of words in each sentence, their types of beginnings, their verbs, etc., they then reflected on their writing style and set goals. At the end of each semester, this tool was used as a summative assessment to see that the goals were met and to document the students' progress. My favorite part is the experimental sentence section, which pushed the students to document their attempts to try new techniques without penalty and without repeating the same techniques that they had already mastered.
