Help your students write their own creative story! This fiction writing unit has 8 days of plans and lessons (8 lessons but unit lasts about 2-3 weeks with writing/drafting work days)
It begins by building up writing stamina with fun prompts. Students write from a prompt in a notebook for a set number of minutes (goes up after every prompt, 2 minutes, 5 minutes, etc.)
Then it leads into building stories together. Students begin a story, then pass it to the person next to them to add on, and continues throughout the class period. In the end they have many stories that all students contributed to.
It touches on the plot diagram and encourages students to follow it in their writing.
There is a lesson where students create a story by answering given questions.
It discusses character development in stories and helps students develop their own characters
Another lesson discusses setting development and how to use the 5 senses to describe the setting
It ends with students using all this knowledge learned to create their own creative story.
These lessons are engaging and fun for students, even if they hate writing. The outcome is well developed, creative stories.
